I am not going on this trip to support a war. Whatever the troops are doing they’re under orders and are making the best of a difficult situation so I am going to distract them for a wee while. I am looking at the small picture ie day to day lives of people in service in a difficult environment and my job is to give them some entertainment (you know, drop and give them 50 or deconstruct a Bushmaster and put it back together in 15 minutes, then maybe some music).
It did help my decision to go knowing the troops are not only there to help defend the Afghans but also to build and rebuild buildings and infrastructure and to assist with training programs.
Is it right that they’re there? Its too big and complex an issue for me to pass judgment on. All I know is I hate war . . . and I bet these troops do too. Rock the desert!
